Environment

CARES Platform: Community. Affordability. Rights. Environment. Safety.

As we develop Madison, we must also protect the rich landscape of Madison's natural environment.  People want to move to Madison because of the way we have intergrated nature into our city. We also know that a bigger population means more pollution, so we have to give better opportunities for people to decrease their carbon footprint through a variety and consistent public transportation options.

Environment

Air Policy

  • Continue to invest in public transportation opportunities in Madison and specifically Downtown Madison that are prone to congestion and lead to lower air quality on the isthmus.

  • Support the community investment in Amtrak in Downtown Madison

Lake Policy

  • Invest in our parks departments to improve the water quality and Beach quality of our city parks through collaborations with the states and county departments

  • Continue to use evidence-based strategies to mitigate pollution from stormwater runoff into Lake Monona and Lake Mendota

  • Work with developers and new home builders in Downtown Madison to create evidence-based Lake-centered solutions to stormwater runoff in new developments

Tree Policy

  • Invest in the urban tree canopy of Downtown Madison

  • Plant more trees on the isthmus

  • Preserve mature trees on the isthmus

  • Provide better direction through zoning to new developers developing around mature trees in Downtown Madison

  • Create new greenspace and pocket parks through working with new developments Support the progression and fruition of The Madison Lakeway Project.

Parks

  • Award developers additional points on their conditional use applications when proving they are centering environmentally friendly decisions for downtown Madison.
